The chassis was taken over from the BMW R 51/2 predecessor model but the engine was a completely new development with the valves being controlled by a central camshaft. Once again, the BMW R 51/3 enabled BMW to set benchmarks for handling, smooth running, and sportiness in the prestigious 500 cc class. The model passed the sporting test with a bravura performance at the Six Day Race in 1951. But the BMW R 51/3 also proved its endurance qualities.
